Today is the final full day of trading for the year. Already, yesterday was the last day of activity for tax purposes in equities.
The focus today has been on Italian bond auctions which came in at lower yields than expected. The 10-yr (6.98%) was below the psychological 7.00%, but the bid-to-cover was weaker than expected and the amount of euros placed was below the EUR 8.0 bln hoped for.
Yesterday saw a sudden move out of the EURUSD on chatter ratings agencies might have passed on information to EU nations about upcoming ratings downgrades. Those rumors were obviously never confirmed. There were also reports that the IMF was taking a hard line with Hungary on aid.
We have been indicating that an S&P downgrade of France (and others?) is probable in January. The EFSF will be rated no higher than the credit rating of its weakest participant.
Today sees a number of key releases from the U.S.
